Due to the campus's economic situation and restructuring within the College of Natural Resources (CNR), CNR will no longer develop or support the "Our Unit" application. Understanding that Our Unit is important to many campus departments, CNR worked with Chief Information Officer Shelton Waggener to find a suitable solution for continued support of this application.
Effective immediately, the Web Applications unit in Information Services and Technology (IST) will take responsibility for the Our Unit application code and will provide transitional support for Our Unit while a long-term roadmap for the application is developed.
IST is committed to making this transition as smooth as possible and, to that end, has been working in consultation with CNR to develop transition plans. IST is also committed to identifying sustainable, secure service models for the key features provided in Our Unit. IST's immediate plans are to continue to operate Our Unit and concurrently hold meetings with Our Unit users, both in town hall settings and individually, as it assesses the future roadmap for the business functions served by Our Unit.
Immediate changes
A key factor to the stability of the transition is an immediate freeze to all non-essential changes to the system. Our Unit users who have enhancements planned or underway for the application are asked to contact the IST Our Unit team, to discuss their enhancements. An exception process to the freeze will be established, and all changes are to be coordinated by the IST Our Unit team.
In addition, IST is making an immediate change to the management practices now in place by implementing "separation of duties", a UCOP and SAS 112 systems management requirement. Going forward, all code changes to the production system must undergo a security and functionality review and approval process prior to release.
The freeze and review processes are necessary actions that will help protect the University (and individual departments) from significant liabilities due to improper function or — even worse — system compromise.
Our Unit support contacts
Support requests, concerns, or comments should be sent to which, in turn, will create a support ticket and a tracking number.
Escalations or more complex concerns should be sent directly to Wendy Jones, project lead for the Our Unit transition, or to Bill Allison, manager of the IST Web Applications unit.
