Around mid-June 2008 (exact date to be announced) the current version of iNews will be replaced by a new, Drupal-based version running on CalWeb Pro, at the URL http://inews.berkeley.edu/.

The current version of iNews is generated by a custom Java application that we can no longer support, and runs on a server (Socrates) that is scheduled to be decommissioned later this year.

We are moving iNews to Drupal, an open-source, web content-management system that allows us to manage the iNews workflow in one integrated environment.

Drupal provides multiple RSS 2.0 newsfeeds pretty much "out of the box", replacing the RSS 0.91 and RSS 1.0 newsfeeds that were generated by the custom Java application in the old version of iNews.

Users of iNews RSS newsfeeds will need to convert newsfeed URLs according to the following pattern:

That is, drop the port number :7077 from the base URL. Then replace rss091.xml or rss100.rdf at the end of the URL with feed. Unfortunately, because the new server environment does not allow us to use URLs with port numbers, we will be unable to redirect old iNews URLs automatically.

In the new version of iNews, the iNews RSS Feeds page will list the available newsfeeds. You will also be able to access newsfeeds by clicking on the orange newsfeed icon at the bottom of each topical news page: Syndicate content

Drupal also allows us to aggregate newsfeeds from outside sources. In the new version of the IT Security page, you will see links to several security-related newsfeeds that we believe will be of interest to the campus IT community.
