Early in 2008, the Chancellor and Campus Budget Office advised campus control units of a planning process for Fiscal Year 2008–09 budget cuts, and asked for budget proposals that included a seven-percent cut to permanent funding. In February 2008, IST and the Office of the CIO (OCIO) launched an effort to identify potential budget reduction measures based on a set of principles that, in essence, stress a programmatic approach to budget reductions rather than an across-the-board approach. As a result, IST and OCIO have proposed 30 budget reduction projects, which are now in progress.

IST will have to reduce overall available resources effective July 1, 2008, due to reductions in permanent state funding across the campus. To reach budget reduction targets, Applications Services is reducing staff resources in the following state-funded areas:

BFS
Payroll
Production Control
Student Systems

Despite this reduction, Applications Services will ensure these systems remain stable and reliable to guarantee continued smooth operations. Applications Services remains committed to providing highly dependable and secure computing applications and environments for teaching, research, and administration.

Going forward, extensive enhancements or development work to these systems will require seeking out additional funding. However, various avenues for this type of funding are available including the IT Bank and the Campus Technology Council (CTC).

Applications Services considered several ways to address its budget reduction situation and feels this cost-saving measure will have the least impact to the campus, and that impact will be minimal.
