Certain Berkeley students on leave from the campus may now be eligible for extended CalMail access. Under the provisions of a new policy developed by the Office of the Registrar, the Graduate Division, and CalNet, students who withdraw or cancel their registration at Berkeley to conduct approved research or to attend an institution abroad through a program other than UC's Education Abroad Program (with intent to apply those earned credits upon return to Berkeley) are eligible for this extension. These students, though not formally registered at Berkeley, are an active part of the campus community and therefore have a need to maintain connections with the campus.
Normally, CalMail privileges expire approximately nine months after a student has withdrawn or cancelled his or her registration, but this new provision would extend access for two years from the ending date of the last fall or spring term that the student had completed. The CalMail extension is not automatic; it must be specifically granted by the student's major department or college/school dean's office via the Online Withdrawal System on the DB2 Student Database. Note that this extension applies only to CalMail and not CalNet eligibility.
We believe this new policy will be of great benefit not only to the students involved, but also to the University. For more specific information regarding this policy, contact Walter Wong,
