This is an announcement of new developments in the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS) services provided by IST.
Laptop IP Service (LIPS) name change
The Laptop IP Service (LIPS) is now called the campus DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) service. LIPS as a name does not describe the breadth of devices the service has come to support; the service is used on campus by many devices other than laptops. The new name also strongly associates the service with the underlying protocol used to provide it.
New dynamic DNS service now available
The new dynamic DNS (Domain Name System) service works in concert with the campus DHCP service. A hostname is associated with a registered device's MAC (Media Access Control) address. When using this service, the DNS is dynamically updated so that the hostname assigned to the device refers to the dynamic IP address assigned by the DHCP server to the device.
Updated web pages describing the campus DHCP service
As part of these service changes, web pages on the Data Network site related to DHCP were reviewed and brought up to date. You are encouraged to look over the Campus DHCP Service pages to find out more about the campus DHCP service and the new dynamic DNS service.
New email lists for announcements about and discussion of the campus DHCP service
Two new email lists, both hosted on lists.berkeley.edu, are available for those interested in the campus DHCP service. The dhcp-announce list is for non-outage or maintenance announcements by IST network staff related to the service, such as new service features or calls for beta testers. The dhcp-discuss list is for discussion of and general questions about the service by members of the campus community. For information on how to request service, report a problem with the campus DHCP service, or subscribe to the DHCP email lists, please see the Campus DHCP Service website.
