This is the fifth in a series of updates that started with the iNews article Student Systems 2012: Rebuilding Berkeley student systems in 2006.

The Student Systems 2012 project took a significant step forward when David Scronce became the Director of Student Systems 2012 on August 15. David will oversee the current Kuali Student and ProSAM projects as well as be accountable for the creation and execution of the strategic plan to replace all legacy student systems.

The first edition of the brochure Student Systems 2012: Your Questions Answered... [PDF] is now available. Questions answered include "What is 2012?", "What areas will be part of the SS2012 program", and many more.

2012 development plan update: Kuali Student

General highlights.

  • The redesigned Kuali Student website makes it much easer to find the latest information about Kuali Student.
  • A concise, two-page brochure, Overview of Kuali Student System Modules [PDF], providing a summary of the student system modules is now available.
  • The University of Southern California (USC) has become a founder of the Kuali Student System, committing $5M to the project (see Kuali Foundation announces new investing partners).
  • Kuali Days VI was held May 12-16, in Chicago — Kuali Days is a conference about what's happening in the larger Kuali community. Ten sessions were devoted to Kuali Student with topics ranging from general information sessions to Business Rules Management Systems. All 10 presentations are available online at the Kuali Days VI website. Note: Kuali Days VII will be in Newport Beach, CA, November 18-19, 2008.

User interface technology. Google Web Toolkit (GWT) will be the preferred user interface technology of Kuali Student. GWT was selected for its capabilities in three areas: browser compatibility, internationalization, and accessibility. For more information about the selection process and the choice of GWT, see the PDF document Kuali Student Service System: User Interface Technology Selection.

Learning Unit Management. Work continues on the first release of Kuali Student software called the Learning Unit Management (LUM) module. This module is designed to allow a wide range of schools to manage the entire life cycle of what Kuali Student calls "Canonical Learning Units" or CLUs. CLUs are the high-level learning experiences that can be thought of as the "products" that the institution is offering. These not only include the traditional academic learning experiences such as degree programs and courses, but also encompass nontraditional learning experiences such as project-based learning, service learning, and co-curricular activities. Details about the LUM module will be available on the Kuali Student website this winter.

2012 implementation plan update: ProSAM — upgrading the financial aid system

The ProSAM project is well underway and significant milestones and timelines have been identified. The first modules of the Sigma Systems product have been installed in the development environment and sample data has been loaded. Regular meetings between the vendor and Financial Aid and Scholarships Office subject matter experts continue throughout the year. In addition, ProSAM project members regularly meet with the ProSAM Steering Committee and other campus stakeholders. These meetings focus on ensuring the new system will interface smoothly with other campus systems and meet the needs of all campus users.
