Information Services and Technology (IST) has implemented a new service to support campus departments, research groups, and other organizations. This service, IST Drupal Cloud Hosting, offers powerful and easy-to-use tools for building and maintaining websites and applications using the Drupal content management platform. We have partnered with San Francisco-based Pantheon to provide free state-of-the-art development tools and affordable hosting plans with 24x7 support.

Service features

The IST Drupal Cloud Hosting service is available on a recharge basis and offers the following features:

  • One-click installation and core Drupal updates
  • Multiple import/migration options
  • Out-of-the box development, staging, and live environments *
  • Scalability (cloud service) as your site needs grow
  • Performance and caching optimizations so your site will not slow down with traffic spikes
  • Remote development and version control
  • Performance monitoring tools (New Relic)
  • Support for SSL **
  • 24x7 support
  • Offsite backups
  • Apache Soir

* including support for On Server Development.
** Pantheon sites can currently be secured with SSL (https) on request. The process for installing a certificate will become more user friendly in subsequent releases of the service.

UC Berkeley starter templates with Berkeley-branded themes, CalNet central authentication, and core modules will be available soon.

Hosting plans

The service also offers four hosting plans.

Plan Price [1] Server Resources [2] Storage Bandwidth
Developer [3] free
Starter $25/month 1 1 GB 10 GB/month
Basic $50/month 2 2 GB 20 GB/month
Standard $100/month 4 4 GB 100 GB/month
Premium $250/month 10 10 GB 250 GB/month
Custom varies varies varies varies
[1] Plan pricing is calculated based on the unit rate of $25 a month multiplied by the plan's average number of units allocated.
[2] Figure indicates average use of server resources. Your use of server resources depends on many factors, including number and complexity of modules, activity of registered users, and overall site traffic. You can monitor your site performance using built-in tools, or request help from IST–Drupal Consulting.
[3] You can develop a site for free. You do not pay until you publicly launch your site.

Sidebar: Web solutions for non-developers coming soon

IST is leveraging the new IST Drupal Cloud Hosting service to develop solutions that will make it easier for non-technical users to build and maintain websites. We will be launching the Berkeley Scholars service, which will allow faculty to easily construct high-quality academic-centric personal websites. This service is based on the Harvard OpenScholar project. We are also developing a comparable service based on Chapter Three's Open Academy for campus departments. IST is working closely with Chapter Three and Pantheon to make both services available during the spring 2012 semester. Stay tuned for more information on these and other projects.
