IST is committed to providing technology services at affordable prices to the campus. One way to reduce cost is to combine operations of common infrastructure with other UC campuses and labs. Reducing the cost of voice services is an important priority. You may recall from a previous announcement that we are planning to combine the operation of our voicemail system with that of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). We expect that by doing this, we will save the campus community more than $200,000 per year. This savings will be reflected in lower costs for many of the voicemail offerings on your monthly bill.
There will be a number of differences between the new and existing voicemail systems. The telephone keypad numbers you press to do things such as retrieve and delete messages will change, as will the web interface. We expect some features, such as the ability to send and receive faxes through your PC, will improve. No core features that you are accustomed to on our current voicemail system will be lost. We will announce more specific information regarding features and access changes soon.
Because the new voicemail system is being implemented collaboratively by UC Berkeley and LBNL, communication may come from either organization. All notifications will come from either a berkeley.edu or an lbl.gov address. We will NEVER ask you for your password or any personal information such as your Social Security number, address, or date of birth. If you suspect someone is using this opportunity to send fraudulent emails, please contact us at
Implementation timetable
Our goal is to convert to the new voicemail system on August 10, 2009, pending successful testing of the new system. The new system is being installed now and we will start limited testing with 50 users later this month. Beginning July 6, we will test with a larger user population, perhaps with as many as 500 users. We will install the production system on August 8 and 9, with a full campus cut-over on August 10. More information will be announced to the campus as we get closer to the conversion date.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at and a team member will respond.
