Good news! The University of California recently issued several new and improved Information Systems (IS) series Bulletins:
- IS-2 Inventory, Classification, and Release of University Electronic Information [PDF] (revised)
- IS-3 Electronic Information Security [PDF] (revised)
- IS-11 Identity and Access Management [PDF] (new)
- IS-12 Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery [PDF] (new)
Also, accompanying the release of these Bulletins is a Management Guide for Information Security at UC that briefly summarizes four areas of electronic information stewardship:
- Oversight of Electronic Information
- Information Security Program
- Identity and Access Management
- Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery
Though posted within UC's Business and Finance site, these Bulletins and the accompanying Guide pertain to all activities in support of the University’s mission of education, research, and public service.
The Guide identifies a range of strategies for achieving a more secure electronic environment in which to conduct the University’s academic, business, and other operations. It references applicable University policies and guidelines and also contains links to helpful resources and tools.
These updated documents are clear and concise. They incorporate language that reflects current best practices and approaches recommended by higher education professional organizations and federal and state regulatory agencies. The new documents set standards for "IS" terminology to be used throughout UC. However, where different terms must be used in special contexts within UC's complex regulatory environment (such as in federal research), the exceptional use of special terminology is noted.
Over the next few months, Berkeley campus reference information — and to a minimal extent, policies — will be updated to implement these UC standards. For further information regarding the policy updates or to identify related resources within our campus environment, please contact Berkeley's OCIO—Security, Policy, and Privacy department,
