The spring 2009 issue of BC&C is the final issue for this print publication, marking the end of a long-standing tradition and heralding an online-only IT news model.

For 18 years, BC&C has served as an invaluable forum for collaborative discussion across the campus on matters related to computing, communications, and IT. Although changing times and the ongoing budget crisis dictate that we stop producing this publication, the end of BC&C does not mean the end of campus IT news. It just means the forum is moving from print to the Web.

iNews

For the last six years, we have published IT news articles in iNews (https://inews.berkeley.edu/), our online IT news service, as well as printed them in BC&C. In fact, the articles appeared in iNews before they appeared in BC&C. We will continue to publish articles about IT from all areas of campus in iNews.

BC&C Online

In addition, this fall, we will pilot BC&C Online, a monthly email digest of iNews articles. Every issue of BC&C Online will feature up to 10 articles, each with a brief summary and a link to the full article in iNews. BC&C Online is a simple way to keep up with what's going on in the campus IT community.

A little history

An IT newsletter in one form or another has been in print at Berkeley for at least 47 years. The following are the various publications produced by the campus's IT organization since 1962:

  • Computing Services Newsletter (1978–1985)
  • Administrative Computing Bulletin (1978–1985)
  • Academic Computing Newsletter (1978–1988)
  • Microcomputer Services at Berkeley (1984)
  • Bears Briefs (1985–1990)
  • AIS Quarterly (1986–1987)
  • Berkeley Computing Quarterly (1989–1991)
  • Berkeley Computing Bulletin (1988–1991)
  • Berkeley Computing (1991–1993) — later renamed Berkeley Computing & Communications (BC&C)
  • Berkeley Computing & Communications (BC&C, 1993–2009, https://inews.berkeley.edu/bccIssues)

Forty-seven years is a long run, and we thank you for your patronage of our IT news publications. We look forward to continuing our relationship with you online.
