It gives me great pleasure to announce that effective January 5, 2009, Dr. Michael Mundrane will join UC Berkeley as the Deputy Chief Information Officer (DCIO) for Information Services and Technology (IST).

Michael comes to UC Berkeley after 13 years in technology leadership positions at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where he most recently served as University Director of Enterprise Systems and Services, a central IT business unit responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and evolution of university-wide infrastructure and administrative systems. Immediately prior to working in IT at Rutgers, he was enrolled as a student there, earning a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Michael has extensive technology infrastructure experience and has been responsible for numerous major technology initiatives at both campus and state levels in New Jersey. He played a key role in bid preparation and evaluation for assessment of the statewide New Jersey fiber network infrastructure, and led the data architecture and design of RUNet 2000, a $100M rebuild of the university voice, video, and data infrastructure. He has participated in developing the network for higher education in New Jersey since its inception nearly a decade ago and remains active on the network advisory board.

As an administrator, Michael has a demonstrated track record of sound business practices that have helped navigate Rutgers through a challenging period marked by considerable student growth and state funding shortfalls. He has built creative, sustainable models for university business processes, and responded to significant institutional financial challenges with broad and effective budget initiatives. In addition to his direct campus work, Michael's collaboration with university CIOs throughout New Jersey led to the creation of a network infrastructure servicing the state universities, delivery of Internet2 throughout this community, and broader understanding of the long-term challenges facing higher education.

As we enter a period of extreme financial and budgetary uncertainty, the addition of Michael's strategic vision, track record of operational excellence, impressive business acumen, outstanding technical skills, and collegial style of governance will have an immediate impact on IST and the Berkeley campus. In addition to his leadership of the IST organization, he will join the Campus Technology Council, working with campus Associate CIOs to help guide campus technology planning and investment decisions for the coming years.
