Information Services and Technology (IST) is committed to providing tools to the campus community for finding restricted data stored on campus computer systems. Data such as credit-card numbers, financial account information, and Social Security numbers may fall into the wrong hands when stored on computer systems vulnerable to loss, theft, or compromise through network-based attacks. Unauthorized access to sensitive information can result in costly notifications, financial and legal liability, and damage to the University's institutional reputation. Our restricted data search program can help identify this sensitive information so it can be properly secured or eliminated when not needed.

Over the last two years, System and Network Security (SNS) has tested and distributed various restricted data search tools to the campus. Earlier solutions offered some success, but limitations have motivated us to continue to look for better solutions. Our current scanning program offers several restricted data identification tools, ranging from self-assessment software to service-based clients reporting to a central management console. For instance, Proventsure "My ID Protector" can be used by all members of the campus community on their own workstations, while system administrators from campus departments can can use our centrally managed service, Proventsure GCP, to scan and view reports for multiple systems. We are continuing to look at new software tools and will keep the campus updated as our restricted data search program improves.
