IST's VPN team is evaluating new VPN hardware/software as part of a project to upgrade the current campus VPN service. As part of our evaluation, we're opening testing of the concentrator hardware and client software to anyone who would like to participate — testers must be eligible to use the production VPN service in order to use the test VPN.
Note that the concentrator hardware must be returned to the vendor at the beginning of May, at which point the test VPN will no longer work. The evaluation concentrator supports up to 100 concurrent VPN sessions.
In addition to 64-bit Windows support, the test VPN setup supports IPv6 transport across the tunnel. If you try out the test VPN, you'll get to try out IPv6 as well, provided your computer supports it. See the Kame turtle dance and the Google logo do the wave! Or, even more exciting, watch a traceroute to those sites over IPv6.
How to be a VPN hardware/software tester
To get started, subscribe to the email list at https://calmail.berkeley.edu/manage/list/listinfo/vpn-eval@lists.berkeley.edu. The list is set up for you to ask questions, exchange feedback, report problems, and receive any announcements regarding the evaluation.
After you subscribe, you will receive a subscription confirmation email with detailed instructions and links for downloading the client software and configuring it.
Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to try out the test VPN.
