Free protection from Internet threats: the C@B Secure CD

Aron Roberts, WSS

The Connecting@Berkeley Secure CD (C@B Secure CD, http://cab-secure.berkeley.edu/) provides you with antivirus and personal firewall software, and is free to current UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students.

The antivirus software on the C@B Secure CD can help keep your Windows PC safe from viruses, worms, and trojans, while the personal firewall software can help protect your PC from attacks over the Internet by blocking or restricting certain types of network connections. If you are a campus system administrator, you can also use a downloadable administrative console, as described below, to deploy and manage this software on the PCs in your department.

Available at several campus locations. You can obtain the C@B Secure CD by presenting your UC Berkeley employee or student ID card at several campus locations, including the campus computer store, The Scholar's Workstation (TSW), in University Hall; the Student Computer Consulting Service (SCCS) in the microcomputer facility on the first floor of Moffitt Library; and the Library reference desks on the second floor of Doe Library and the third floor of Moffitt Library (in the Information Gateway). In addition, Residential Computing and Haas Computing Services have also generously agreed to participate in campus distribution of this CD.

Helps your PC meet campus security standards. The C@B Secure CD is part of the campus's response to a succession of high profile attacks which have exploited security vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Windows operating system. Some examples of malicious code which attacked campus computers during 2003 and early 2004 include the "Slammer" and "Blaster" worms, which established rapid-fire connections to millions of computers over the Internet in an attempt to exploit vulnerable Windows software, and the "SoBig", "Klez", and "MyDoom" families of worms, which spread quickly through infected email attachments and by mailing additional copies of themselves from infected computers.

To help protect the campus community against further attacks, the campus has developed a set of Minimum Security Standards for Networked Devices (http://security.berkeley.edu/MinStds/). Beginning February 1, 2005, computers not meeting these standards could potentially be blocked from the campus network until their security deficiencies are corrected. The software provided on the C@B Secure CD is intended to help your computer meet some of the key requirements of these campus security standards.

Comes with antivirus, firewall, and more. The featured product on the C@B Secure CD is Symantec Client Security (SCS), a software package for Microsoft Windows for which the campus recently obtained a license from Symantec Corporation. SCS is a suite consisting of two products: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, which provides comprehensive antivirus protection, and Symantec Client Firewall, a personal (or "host-based") software firewall.

In addition, the C@B Secure CD can:

Allows departments to manage desktop security software. If you are a campus system administrator, you can use the Symantec System Center (SSC) administrative console to deploy the antivirus and firewall software on the C@B Secure CD over the campus network to PCs in your department, as well as to manage and update this software on an ongoing basis. Among other advantages, this makes it easier for your department to distribute antivirus and firewall settings which reflect your users' current security needs and software environments. SSC is available for downloading via Symantec Client Security Administrator CD images from the WSSG Software website (http://software.berkeley.edu/).

Provides security at work and home. You can install the software on the C@B Secure CD on both your work and home computers. You may legally use this software on your home computer as long as you are affiliated with UC Berkeley and the campus continues to maintain its licenses for this software.

Runs on most Windows systems. The antivirus and personal firewall software on the C@B Secure CD works with all recent versions of Microsoft Windows, from Windows 98 to Windows XP. The antivirus software also works with server editions of Windows, from Windows NT through Windows 2003 Server, but the personal firewall software does not. Some other software packages and tools on the CD require Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Alternatives are available for Macintosh users. While there is no Macintosh software on the C@B Secure CD, campus users can obtain Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh, the campus's licensed antivirus software for the Mac OS, from the Connecting@Berkeley 2004 CD (http://cab.berkeley.edu/) or by downloading it from the WSSG Software website (http://software.berkeley.edu/). Norton Personal Firewall for Macintosh, recently licensed by the campus, is expected to be available for downloading from that website later in the spring 2004 semester. Macintosh users can also set up their computers to automatically check for Apple's security updates, as these become available, by following SNS's instructions on Updating the Macintosh Operating System (http://security.berkeley.edu:2002/MinStds/Updating-Macintosh.html).

From the people who brought you the C@B CD. The C@B Secure CD is a new security product from the team of IST's Workstation Software Support Group who also produced the Connecting@Berkeley 2004 CD. The C@B Secure CD is a standalone CD, however, and does not require any other CD in order to work. Some of its software and tools will be incorporated into the Connecting@Berkeley 2005 CD, which is slated for release at the beginning of the fall 2004 semester.
