Update: Limited offer to replace current CRT monitors

The special offer on LCD monitors announced in the article Limited offer to replace current CRT monitors was even more popular than we had imagined. All 150 monitors have been requested. We will be offering a similar program after the first of the year. September 23, 2008.

Safety notice: iPhone 3G ultracompact USB power adapter exchange program

Apple has determined that under certain conditions, the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter's metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. Replacement adapters will be available starting Friday, October 10, 2008. Customers who own an affected adapter should immediately stop using it until they exchange it for a new, redesigned ultracompact adapter. September 20, 2008.

Career Compass IT job family mapping update

HR has received more than 500 job descriptions for IT positions across campus to be mapped to the new Career Compass job matrix. Review committees comprising campus experts who will advise HR regarding proper mapping are being set up for job fields like IT that are used campuswide. Likewise, similar review committees will be formed for senior-level IT positions. Confirmation of new job families and levels for non-represented employees is expected to occur in the first half of 2009. September 16, 2008.

Green computing at Berkeley

The Office of the Chief Information Officer, Information Services and Technology, the Office of Sustainability, and Facilities Services are collaborating on two projects to address the issue of campus computers and the greenhouse gases emitted by their use. The first, Desktop Power Management, will introduce state-of-the-art software that will allow campus IT administrators to configure customizable computer energy settings appropriate for each user; the second will replace CRT monitors with LCD monitors. A growing calendar network wins Sautter Award

Since its debut in December 2006, the UC Berkeley Calendar Network has spread across the campus like an irrepressible idea, and now connects the online calendars of 51 colleges, departments, and units. The network provides what is arguably the most comprehensive listing of events published by any university. In July, the University of California recognized the calendar network and its developers, awarding it the Larry L. Sautter Golden Award for Innovation in Information Technology. August 18, 2008.

UC Berkeley Calendar Network Application wins Larry L. Sautter Award for Innovation in Information Technology

The award-winning UC Berkeley Calendar Network Application has received two more honors: the 2008 Larry L. Sautter Golden Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Information Technology, and a 2008 CASE Circle of Excellence Award. July 21, 2008.

UC Berkeley's main website, http://www.berkeley.edu/, has been redesigned from the ground up. The NewsCenter article New UC Berkeley gateway website debuted Saturday, June 14 describes some of the campus website's new features, and discusses the redesign process. June 23, 2008.

The IT Events calendar: A new way to publicize your event

The Office of the CIO is pleased to announce the Information Technology (IT) Events calendar, a new addition to the UC Berkeley Calendar Network. The IT Events calendar is designed to function as an aggregate of IT-related events that are sponsored by groups and departments throughout the Berkeley campus, with the goal of making the IT Events calendar a resource where all campus IT events can be seen in a single place. Annual call for Sautter Award nominations

The Larry L. Sautter Award for Innovation in Information Technology encourages and recognizes innovative deployment of information technology in support of the University's mission. The award honors projects developed by faculty and staff in any department at the ten UC campuses, five medical centers, the UC Office of the President (UCOP), and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The nomination deadline for the 2008 Sautter Award is May 23, 2008. April 1, 2008.
