Developing and extending a cyberinfrastructure model

This is an abstract of a paper by Rosio Alvarez, CIO of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, that explores how to develop, deploy, and extend cyberinfrastructure assets within higher education -- both within and across institutions. Instructions for accessing the paper are included. March 10, 2008.

The evolution of the IT organization

Interim Deputy CIO Kelly Haberer to retire

Kelly Haberer, Interim Deputy Chief Information Officer for Information Services and Technology, has announced she will retire effective June 27, 2008, following many years of outstanding service and contributions to the University and campus community. February 13, 2008.

2008–2009 IT Funding Request call

On January 16, 2008, the Chief Information Officer sent the FY 2008–09 IT Funding Request call to UC Berkeley's Vice Chancellors. This is the second year for this activity-based budgeting approach, which is an integrated part of Berkeley's annual campus budget process. IT funding requests should be submitted through the appropriate Control Unit according to that Control Unit's process and deadlines. January 23, 2008.

2007 IST and OCIO accomplishments

Much of the focus at IST and the Office of the CIO (OCIO) over the last 12 months has been on the major restructuring of the central IT organization that began in July 2006. The most visible impact has been the shift to a services-oriented organization with a clearly defined separation of IT demand (OCIO) from IT supply (IST). The campus has also made good progress this year on technology projects with campuswide impact. Some highlights of the IST and OCIO accomplishments to date for 2007 are listed in this article. New UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley Lab technology partnership links campus and Lab

In response to requests for expanded technology services in several strategic areas, UC Berkeley's CIO Shel Waggener and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's newly appointed CIO Rosio Alvarez are pleased to announce their sponsorship of several new Berkeley and LBNL IT partnerships. The shared goal of these new partnerships is to provide the best technology service offerings to all investigators from the combined Berkeley and LBNL IT communities, leveraging expertise from each group based on specific competencies. September 28, 2007.

Interim Technology Program Office director announced

Peggy Huston has accepted the position of Interim Director of the OCIO-Technology Program Office (TPO). Serving in this position for 18 months, Peggy will oversee the TPO's IT Programs, IT Projects, and IT Communications units. August 22, 2007.

Kelly Haberer appointed IST Interim Deputy CIO

The Interim Deputy CIO of Information Services and Technology (IST) is responsible for the IST organization, reports directly to the CIO, and represents IST on the Campus Technology Council (CTC). The search for a permanent Deputy CIO for IST will continue, with the expectation of filling the position by fall semester 2007. April 9, 2007.
