Current Campus VPN (virtual private network) service to end on August 12

All users of the current Campus VPN service will need to switch to a new VPN service, available July 13, 2009. The current service will be disabled August 12, 2009. Information about the new service may be found on the Campus VPN Service website. Instructions for installing the new VPN client are available in the IST Knowledge Base article Getting started with the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. July 14, 2009.

Free servers available for campus departments: Round 2

IST has received the second in a series of server donations from Broadcom Corporation. These servers are currently available to campus departments. To request a server, read the terms and conditions and submit the available online request form. July 10, 2009.

Samsung netbook demo, July 14, 2009

IST presents a talk and demo with Samsung representatives to look at the Samsung netbooks, and discuss the differences between notebooks and netbooks. RSVP recommended. July 10, 2009.

TAM Presents: Virtual Desktop Integration (VDI), July 17, 2009

UC Berkeley and LBNL team up to provide less expensive voice service for the campus

UC Berkeley has sufficient scale to operate its own telephone service, and estimates show the campus can save between 15 and 20 percent over current costs by doing so. Savings are increased by combining operations with LBNL. July 2, 2009.

x64 service

The newly announced x64 service is a hardware provisioning service that primarily serves as a foundation for other IST value-added services. It will be used as the delivery platform for the next generation of the Unix WebFarm and CalWeb Pro web hosting services. It replaces the existing HP provisioning service, and is currently available in 4-socket increments at a cost of $600 per month. July 2, 2009.

AirBears app broken by iPhone 3.0 release

IST has been testing the AirBears app with beta versions of the iPhone 3.0 developer software for the last few months with no problems. Unfortunately, while the betas of iPhone 3.0 worked fine with the AirBears app, the production version is now behaving differently. IST is working to resolve this issue in the long term. UC Office of the President (UCOP) Strategic Sourcing and Dell have worked together to provide super-saver computer systems, which are now posted to the Dell Premier website. These special offers are good through the end of June 2009. June 9, 2009.

Update on the new Berkeley voicemail system

UC Berkeley is collaborating with LBNL to offer a new voicemail system to the campus. The new system is expected to save the campus $200,000 per year. June 4, 2009.
