Finding restricted data on campus computer systems

Over the last two years, System and Network Security (SNS) has tested and distributed various restricted data search tools to the campus. Earlier solutions offered some success, but limitations have motivated us to continue to look for better solutions. Our current scanning program offers several restricted data identification tools, ranging from self-assessment software to service-based clients reporting to a central management console. Payroll/Personnel System (PPS) moves to UCOP

On May 9, 2009, the Payroll/Personnel System (PPS) is tentatively scheduled to move from the Berkeley campus mainframe to that of the UC Office of the President (UCOP). Moving the system from the campus mainframe to UCOP's mainframe will result in improved efficiencies and cost savings. March 26, 2009.

Cloud computing in education

The UC Berkeley Reliable Adaptive Distributed Systems Laboratory (RAD Lab) piloted a software project course in 2007 focused exclusively on developing and deploying software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications. In fall 2008, the course was moved from Berkeley-owned infrastructure to the cloud. March 17, 2009.

IST's new service offering: System Center Configuration Manager

IST announces the System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) service, a comprehensive change and configuration management solution for the Windows platform. This service is intended for departments needing to assess, deploy, and update their IT systems such as servers, desktops, and devices, across a distributed environment. The recharge fee for this service is $329 per month for each SCCM instance. March 12, 2009.

IST rate change for Premise Wiring, Network Design and Project Management, and Data Network Engineering

IST announces changes in the recharge rates for services that support voice and data connection installations. The new rates went into effect January 1, 2009. March 11, 2009.

Using Natural Language Processing and Social Network Analysis to study ancient Babylonian society

Researchers in Berkeley's Department of Near Eastern Studies are working with IST–Data Services on a project using Natural Language Processing and graph analysis to support their research into ancient Babylonian society. In addition to processing valuable data, the project serves as a demonstration of broader initiatives to effectively apply technology in support of research in the Humanities. March 10, 2009.

2009 Sautter Award project nominations due April 27

The 2009 University of California Larry L. Sautter Award for Innovation in Information Technology is open for applications. Application details are posted on the Web at http://www.ucop.edu/irc/itlc/sautter/sautter2008.html. Sautter Award recipients will be announced in an award ceremony at the annual UC Computing Services Conference (UCCSC) — hosted this year at UC Davis, June 16–17. March 6, 2009.

Annual credit-card compliance process

In order to conduct credit-card transactions, merchants must meet the security standards set by the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council. Every year, the UC Berkeley Controller's office must submit an attestation confirming that campus merchants have implemented their credit-card acceptance solutions in a manner that adheres to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Requirements and Security Assessment Procedures. IST's new service offering: Windows ColdFusion Web Farm Service

IST's new Windows ColdFusion Web Farm Service is intended for campus customers who need a redundant, highly available, and secure environment for hosting their ColdFusion applications. The recharge fee for this service is $112 per application site per month. March 3, 2009.
