CalNet Terms of Service

CalNet has established terms of service that relate to the CalNet test environment; login and logout standards for applications that use the Central Authentication Service (CAS); and a prohibition against proxied CalNet Authentication without an approved exception. The CalNet team asks campus departments to comply with these terms by June 30, 2010.

Improving the IT experience for incoming students

In spring 2009, the CalNet team partnered closely with staff in Student Affairs–myBerkeleyApp and IST–Web Applications to implement a number of changes, such as reducing the wait time for creating CalNet IDs, to help improve the experience new students have when they first access electronic resources on campus.

IST seeks volunteers to help test new AirBears captive portal system

Testing of the new captive portal — a replacement for the current authentication system used with AirBears — at 2484 Shattuck and 2195 Hearst (Earl Warren Hall) is going well. The Captive Portal team is now opening the testing process to the campus community and has scheduled three open testing sessions for the end of September.

CalNetPKI, the UC Berkeley Certificate Authority

CalNetPKI is a free IST service that provides a certificate authority to the campus for use in a variety of security-related tasks. Available certificates include those that are used for code signing, encrypting websites via SSL, digitally signing and encrypting email, encrypting files with EFS, and securing network traffic with IPSec.

Current Campus VPN (virtual private network) service to end on August 12

All users of the current Campus VPN service will need to switch to a new VPN service, available July 13, 2009. The current service will be disabled August 12, 2009. Information about the new service may be found on the Campus VPN Service website. Instructions for installing the new VPN client are available in the IST Knowledge Base article Getting started with the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

New captive portal system in development for AirBears

IST's Captive Portal team is developing a replacement for the current authentication system used with AirBears. This article includes information about this new system and the changes it will bring to AirBears.

PPS Migration Update

Due to anomolies found during system testing, the move of the Payroll/Personnel System (PPS) from the Berkeley campus mainframe to that of UC Office of the President has been postponed until August 2009.

Communications infrastructure: The next generation

In fall 2007, Chief Information Officer Shel Waggener, Controller John Ellis, and Campus Budget Officer Paul Jenny sponsored a project to develop a sustainable allocation model that would support the campus communication network. The existing model, implemented in 2000, has not adequately accommodated the significant changes of the last nine years and presents a number of risks for the campus. Implementation of the new model is scheduled for January 2010.

Wired Network Device Registration application replaces LIPS/DHCP MAC Registration application

IST's Infrastructure Services is pleased to announce a new web application for registering devices for use on the campus wired network. The new Wired Network Device Registration application replaces the former LIPS/DHCP MAC Registration service and is available now.

Self-select a personal CalNet ID

As a member of the UC Berkeley campus community, if you haven't already done so, you must self select a personal CalNet ID this month, January 2009. Failure to do so will eventually lead to your inability to use any campus service that requires a CalNet ID.
