AWS service extension request requirements
The CalNet team will discontinue AWS service on January 5, 2009. If
you have an application that will continue to need AWS after January 5, you must take specific steps to request an exception by no later than January 2. December 15, 2008.
Self select a new CalNet ID in January 2009
As a member of the campus community, if you have not already done so, you will need to choose a new CalNet ID in January 2009. December 12, 2008.
CalNet Guest accounts - call for campus input
The CalNet Guest Account Task Force is soliciting campus input in order to establish clear requirements for a guest account management system in CalNet. Responses are appreciated by December 24. December 5, 2008.
AWS to be retired on January 5, 2009
This is the first of many reminders that the Authentication Web Server (AWS) will be retired on January 5, 2009, and will be replaced by the CalNet Central Authentication Service (CAS). CalNet developers are asked to convert their applications to CAS by mid-December. October 20, 2008.
Network Communications Funding Model project update
The Network Communications Funding Model project is progressing on schedule. The next phase of the project is now beginning and will focus on analyzing the impact of the model at the departmental level. September 24, 2008.
Federated identity management
Identity federations facilitate the sharing of electronic resources between associated institutions. Federated identity management allows users to log in using their local authentication credentials (the CalNet ID and passphrase in Berkeley's case) to access electronic resources hosted at other institutions belonging to the same identity federation. UC Berkeley is a member of two identity federations: InCommon and UCTrust. September 18, 2008.
CalNet Second-Level Authentication
Campus departments have expressed an interest in tools that will reduce the risk of compromising data for applications that provide access to sensitive/restricted data. One of those tools is the new CalNet Second-Level Authentication. September 16, 2008.
IPv6: The pig is about to fly
This article discusses the history of Internet addressing methods and why there is the need to move to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). In addition, IST is currently working with campus departments who wish to test IPv6 on their workstation or server networks. People wanting to be early adopters or testers can join a mailing list, and send email indicating what kind of testing they're willing to do. September 12, 2008.
IST-Enterprise Storage and Backup: Helping you fight the budget crunch!
In July 2008, IST's Storage and Backup Group (SBG) reduced pricing 25 percent, for Premium-tier and Enhanced-tier storage services available on the SBG Storage Area Network (SAN). SBG also introduced a new, low-cost Mass-tier storage service on the SAN for customers needing multiple terabytes of data storage capacity. September 12, 2008.
Mandatory training in new systems for CalNet deputies
The CalNet team will soon implement new services that will impact the responsibilities of the CalNet deputies as well as the CalNet deputy applications. The changes are significant enough to require mandatory, in-person training of all CalNet deputies. Training sessions will be held through August 2008. July 30, 2008.
