Identity federations facilitate the sharing of electronic resources between associated institutions. Federated identity management allows users to log in using their local authentication credentials (the CalNet ID and passphrase in Berkeley's case) to access electronic resources hosted at other institutions belonging to the same identity federation. This article discusses the history of Internet addressing methods and why there is the need to move to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). In addition, IST is currently working with campus departments who wish to test IPv6 on their workstation or server networks. In July 2008, IST's Storage and Backup Group (SBG) reduced pricing 25 percent, for Premium-tier and Enhanced-tier storage services available on the SBG Storage Area Network (SAN). SBG also introduced a new, low-cost Mass-tier storage service on the SAN for customers needing multiple terabytes of data storage capacity. September 12, 2008.
The CalNet team will soon implement new services that will impact the responsibilities of the CalNet deputies as well as the CalNet deputy applications. The changes are significant enough to require mandatory, in-person training of all CalNet deputies. Training sessions will be held through August 2008. July 30, 2008.
