CalHPC: A dedicated cluster support service for campus researchers
IST is collaborating with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to offer campus researchers a comprehensive service for supporting Linux-based computing clusters hosted in the campus data center. September 30, 2008.
New service allows external users to access CalShare sites
The CalShare User Manager Service gives authorized CalNet account holders the ability to create CalShare user accounts that can be used to access content hosted in CalShare sites. This service will be very helpful for CalShare users who need to grant access to their CalShare site to people outside UC Berkeley who do not have CalNet IDs or other CalNet AD accounts. Socrates and Arachne Abatement Project update
The timeline for the retirement of the Socrates and Arachne servers has been extended to the end of the fall 2008 semester. September 10, 2008.
From Restarting Berkeley to UC Ready
UC Ready, version 3.0 of UC Berkeley's well-received continuity planning tool, is the designated tool of the Office of the President's UC Ready Program, a disaster-preparedness effort that will span the entire UC system. The tool is scheduled to launch October 31, 2008. September 4, 2008.
Extending CalMail access for students on approved leave
Under the provisions of a new policy developed by the Office of the Registrar, the Graduate Division, and CalNet, students who withdraw or cancel their registration at Berkeley to conduct approved research or to attend an institution abroad through a program other than UC's Education Abroad Program are eligible for extended CalMail access. September 3, 2008.
IST Service Desk to reduce hours of service
Due to reductions in permanent state funding, the IST Service Desk will eliminate its weekend and extended service hours. Effective October 1, 2008, the new service hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. September 2, 2008.
Dwinelle Lab to close at end of fall semester
Due to budget cuts, the Dwinelle computing facility will delay opening until September 29, 2008, and will offer reduced hours for the fall 2008 semester; the lab will close permanently at the end of the fall term. August 30, 2008.
UC Berkeley launches WarnMe alerting and warning service
UC Berkeley instituted a new alerting and warning service on August 25 to help keep the campus community informed in an immediate crisis. Called WarnMe, the new campus service proactively contacts individual students, faculty, and staff to warn them of situations on or near campus that may pose an immediate threat to their safety. August 29, 2008.
Next generation of CalAgenda
IST is looking at CalDAV-based open-source calendaring systems as possible replacements for Oracle Calendar, the calendaring system currently being used for CalAgenda, and is seeking campus input. August 22, 2008.
