The CalMail service began transitioning to CalNet authentication at 6:00 am Monday, August 3, 2009, with the cutover of the webmail clients to CAS. The IST Service Desk has extra CalNet deputies on hand to assist those who have forgo tten their CalNet IDs and passphrases. Users of departmental accounts that have not yet been switched over to the CalNet authentication system can use a legacy URL to temporariliy access those accounts. August 4, 2009.
Beginning August 3, 2009, CalMail will transition to CalNet authentication and participate in CalNet's campuswide single sign-on system, CAS. This transition will continue until September 30, 2009, when users will no longer need to remember a separate password to access their email. July 17, 2009.
UC Berkeley has sufficient scale to operate its own telephone service, and estimates show the campus can save between 15 and 20 percent over current costs by doing so. Savings are increased by combining operations with LBNL. July 2, 2009.
The newly announced x64 service is a hardware provisioning service that primarily serves as a foundation for other IST value-added services. It will be used as the delivery platform for the next generation of the Unix WebFarm and CalWeb Pro web hosting services. It replaces the existing HP provisioning service, and is currently available in 4-socket increments at a cost of $600 per month. July 2, 2009.
IST has been testing the AirBears app with beta versions of the iPhone 3.0 developer software for the last few months with no problems. Unfortunately, while the betas of iPhone 3.0 worked fine with the AirBears app, the production version is now behaving differently. IST is working to resolve this issue in the long term. A rate change for UCBackup services went into effect May 1, 2009. This rate change decreased the monthly usage fee and introduced a new per-account maintenance fee. UCBackup provides centralized, network-based backup and recovery services for computer systems on the UC Berkeley campus. May 26, 2009.
AFS is a distributed networked file system that integrates with the desktop environment and works on all major platforms. Benefits to customers engaged in collaborative work include access to files from anywhere, encryption of data over the network, and fine-grained permission control. May 21, 2009.
As part of the campus effort to develop a new communications funding model, IST conducted a review of current voice service rates. During the review, IST determined that the current rates for the Private Branch Exchange (PBX) service could be adjusted downward to match the standard Centrex rate for campus, and implemented the rate change effective April 2009. Over the last year, there has been much discussion among the UC institutions (UC campuses and LBNL) about sharing with and purchasing services from other institutions as a cost-saving measure. In those discussions, it was determined that voice mail / unified messaging (VM/UM) is a service that UC Berkeley could cost effectively purchase from LBNL. The cost savings would come from shared licensing and support costs. Our current VM/UM system will need to be upgraded within the next year, so the timing is very good. April 15, 2009.
IST announces the System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) service, a comprehensive change and configuration management solution for the Windows platform. This service is intended for departments needing to assess, deploy, and update their IT systems such as servers, desktops, and devices, across a distributed environment. The recharge fee for this service is $329 per month for each SCCM instance. March 12, 2009.
