Changes at The Scholar's Workstation

Effective spring 2009, the Scholar's Workstation will become a part of the Lower Sproul Plaza Student Union retail area operated by the ASUC and its campus bookstore agent, Follett. TSW @ the Cal Student Store will have a new retail space for all individual sales, and a separate dedicated location to serve campus institutional/departmental sales. December 5, 2008.

DOCS Hardware Support pilots new on-site repair service

DOCS Hardware Support is piloting a program with external vendor ComputerCare, to provide an on-site computer repair technician on the UC Berkeley campus. This pilot will run from November 17, 2008, through the end of the fall 2008 semester. November 7, 2008.

Dwinelle Computer Lab to close permanently November 26

The Dwinelle Microcomputer Facility, located in B-3 Dwinelle Hall, will close permanently as of 5:00 pm, Wednesday, November 26, 2008. This is sooner than previously announced due to a marked decrease in user demand for the lab this term. All other general access computing facilities will remain open throughout the fall semester. Socrates and Arachne Customer Forum, October 21, 2008

IST will host a forum for Socrates and Arachne customers, Tuesday, October 21, 2008, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon in Sibley Auditorium, where it will outline the plan to retire the Socrates and Arachne servers on December 19, 2008, and present final solutions and migration options which will be particularly relevant to web customers. October 20, 2008.

CalHPC: A dedicated cluster support service for campus researchers

IST is collaborating with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to offer campus researchers a comprehensive service for supporting Linux-based computing clusters hosted in the campus data center. September 30, 2008.

New service allows external users to access CalShare sites

The CalShare User Manager Service gives authorized CalNet account holders the ability to create CalShare user accounts that can be used to access content hosted in CalShare sites. This service will be very helpful for CalShare users who need to grant access to their CalShare site to people outside UC Berkeley who do not have CalNet IDs or other CalNet AD accounts. Although the campus directory is no longer printed, the information that used to be published in it is now available online at http://cns-cs.berkeley.edu/phone/dir/. September 10, 2008.

Socrates and Arachne Abatement Project update

The timeline for the retirement of the Socrates and Arachne servers has been extended to the end of the fall 2008 semester. September 10, 2008.

From Restarting Berkeley to UC Ready

UC Ready, version 3.0 of UC Berkeley's well-received continuity planning tool, is the designated tool of the Office of the President's UC Ready Program, a disaster-preparedness effort that will span the entire UC system. The tool is scheduled to launch October 31, 2008. September 4, 2008.

Extending CalMail access for students on approved leave

Under the provisions of a new policy developed by the Office of the Registrar, the Graduate Division, and CalNet, students who withdraw or cancel their registration at Berkeley to conduct approved research or to attend an institution abroad through a program other than UC's Education Abroad Program are eligible for extended CalMail access.
