IST Service Desk to reduce hours of service

Due to reductions in permanent state funding, the IST Service Desk will eliminate its weekend and extended service hours. Effective October 1, 2008, the new service hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. September 2, 2008.

Dwinelle Lab to close at end of fall semester

Due to budget cuts, the Dwinelle computing facility will delay opening until September 29, 2008, and will offer reduced hours for the fall 2008 semester; the lab will close permanently at the end of the fall term. August 30, 2008.

UC Berkeley launches WarnMe alerting and warning service

UC Berkeley instituted a new alerting and warning service on August 25 to help keep the campus community informed in an immediate crisis. Called WarnMe, the new campus service proactively contacts individual students, faculty, and staff to warn them of situations on or near campus that may pose an immediate threat to their safety. Next generation of CalAgenda

IST is looking at CalDAV-based open-source calendaring systems as possible replacements for Oracle Calendar, the calendaring system currently being used for CalAgenda, and is seeking campus input. August 22, 2008.

AFS Service pilot announcement

IST's Collaboration Tools group is piloting an AFS service and is looking for participants. AFS (Andrew File System) is a distributed networked file system that integrates with the desktop environment and works on all major platforms. The service is designed to provide secure access to your data from any computer. August 20, 2008.

IST modem service to end

As of December 19, 2008, IST will no longer offer the SHIPS Service or the Low Cost Modem Service. This means IST will no longer offer any modem service to the campus. August 19, 2008.

New IST Service Status page launched

On June 12, 2008, the new IST Service Status page was put into production. This robust new system allows the Service Desk staff to make updates quickly from any machine, on or off campus, providing campus customers with timely information about any service-related disruptions and scheduled outages. DOCS Hardware Support and in-warranty work for Dell and Apple hardware

Due to temporary staff vacancies, effective August 6, 2008 and until further notice, DOCS Hardware Support, a.k.a. Campus Computer Repair and Support (CCRS), asks members of the campus community to contact Apple and Dell directly should they need in-warranty work done on hardware by these manufacturers. August 8, 2008.

New authorization system for CalMail mailing lists

The CalMail Team has implemented a new authorization system for managing mailing lists in CalMail. This new system provides an easy interface for list owners to delegate mailing list administration and moderation privileges to individuals. August 6, 2008.

Firewall rate change

Significant changes in the rate for IST's Integrated Firewall Services Module (FWSM) went into effect July 1, 2008. These changes include removing the $700 setup fee, shifting from an annual billing cycle to monthly billing, and increasing the overall rate to $49 per month. August 4, 2008.
