UC Berkeley instituted a new alerting and warning service on August 25 to help keep the campus community informed in an immediate crisis. Called WarnMe, the new campus service proactively contacts individual students, faculty, and staff to warn them of situations on or near campus that may pose an immediate threat to their safety. IST's Collaboration Tools group is piloting an AFS service and is looking for participants. AFS (Andrew File System) is a distributed networked file system that integrates with the desktop environment and works on all major platforms. As of December 19, 2008, IST will no longer offer the SHIPS Service or the Low Cost Modem Service. This means IST will no longer offer any modem service to the campus. August 19, 2008.

Significant changes in the rate for IST's Integrated Firewall Services Module (FWSM) went into effect July 1, 2008. These changes include removing the $700 setup fee, shifting from an annual billing cycle to monthly billing, and increasing the overall rate to $49 per month. August 4, 2008.
