Appropriate topics. The primary purpose of iNews/BC&C is to offer IT (information technology) news of interest to the UC Berkeley campus community. Articles are submitted by IST staff and other campus and University units.
Articles in iNews/BC&C include product or service announcements, and discussions of policy/planning matters and campus IT projects. iNews/BC&C is not intended for tutorial or highly technical material. Exceptions might be made for material of extremely wide interest (e.g., aimed at all 40,000 CalMail users).
Highly detailed or technical material should be presented elsewhere, perhaps on a departmental website. The iNews/BC&C article can then give a general overview and point to the primary source for details.
"Vaporware" references. Articles may refer to future events (service changes, product releases) or to websites that are not yet in place. Keep in mind that information must be correct as of the web publication date.
Length of articles. Articles are to be 800 words or shorter, which is equivalent to about one page of the printed layout or two pages as displayed by a typical web browser window. Because of space limitations, we encourage contributors to keep articles even shorter, 400 words or less if possible. We will not enforce these limits in the online version, once we start on the paper (BC&C) edition, we may need to condense long articles.
How to submit. Send articles by email to We accept many common formats including HTML, plain text, and common word-processor formats (such as MS Word). However, HTML and plain text are best, since our immediate goal will be to produce a draft in HTML. You may also submit pictures and graphics. Materials can be sent as email attachments.
Don't resubmit! Once you have submitted an article, please do not resubmit revised versions. If you cannot meet the original article deadline, please discuss the situation with us. In most cases, it will be better if you arrange for an extension of a few days and then submit a more finished version of the article. If you need to make revisions online, we can email you our working copy of the article or tell you where you can download it using a web browser.
Condensation in print (BC&C). Because of space limitations in the BC&C, we may have to condense articles to fit.
The HTML and print versions of iNews/BC&C articles are not strictly parallel. When we condense an article to fit the BC&C, we do not go back and make parallel changes to the HTML edition. Also, the order of articles and sections may be slightly different.
